About TR3 files
The .tr3 file extension represents a TomeRaider 3 eBook file. Developed by Yadabyte, the TomeRaider software was widely used in the early 2000s for Palm OS, Pocket PC, and Windows Mobile devices. These files function as highly compressed text databases, typically used for massive reference materials like offline dictionaries, encyclopedias, and early offline dumps of Wikipedia.
The .tr3 format is obsolete and completely proprietary. It is not supported by modern e-readers like Kindle or Kobo, nor can it be opened natively on modern iOS or Android smartphones. Users are locked out of their old eBooks unless they have access to legacy hardware or emulators running the discontinued TomeRaider software.
To make these files readable today, users must convert them to modern, open standards like EPUB, PDF, or MOBI. Converting to TXT is also an option if you only need the raw text, though you will lose navigation structures, hyperlinks, and basic formatting.
Because .tr3 is a closed, proprietary database format that relies on specific legacy compression algorithms, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original TomeRaider Windows application can properly export the text. Our tool will inspect the file to extract underlying text or metadata when possible, offering a realistic workaround for abandoned legacy formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TR3 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The TR3 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TR3 converter.
