A .tools file is a CAM tool library used in Computer-Aided Manufacturing software to define precise CNC machining parameters like cutter diameter, flute length, spindle speed, and feed rates. These files are predominantly generated by Autodesk Fusion 360 and SheetCam. Managing these files outside of their native ecosystems is frustrating. The format is highly proprietary, making it notoriously difficult to share tool libraries between different CAM platforms or export them into a spreadsheet for inventory tracking. Standard online converters fail to process .tools files because they cannot parse hyper-specific manufacturing algorithms. For Autodesk Fusion 360 users, the best workaround is renaming the file extension to .ZIP to extract the underlying .JSON data, which can then be converted to .CSV. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, often only the original software can properly read or export the data.
