About TOKEN files

A .token file is a generic data container used by various software ecosystems to store authentication keys, session states, or configuration parameters. The most common source (approx. 35%) is Microsoft Defender, which uses them for Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) handshakes. Another significant portion originates from Apple services, specifically for CloudKit server changes (often in PLIST format) or device activation requests (formatted as XML).

The main limitation for users is the file's ambiguity. Because the extension describes the purpose (a token) rather than the format, operating systems cannot automatically associate it with the correct viewer. A user might try to open a .token file in a text editor only to find unreadable binary garbage if it is an encrypted ATP blob or a binary Property List. Furthermore, these files often exist deep within system directories; moving or modifying them can break the synchronization or security features they support.

To make sense of a .token file, conversion is often necessary to reveal the underlying structure:

Convert.Guru analyzes your TOKEN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TFT, CLIENT, KSS, JSON and ID files.

The TOKEN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TOKEN converter.
