About TOKEN files

.TOKEN files are system-generated data files used to store security credentials, device activation requests, or server sync states. The most common variants in enterprise environments are Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) tokens utilized by Microsoft Defender, CloudKit server change tokens from Apple, and device activation requests generated by Apple Configurator. In a smaller subset of specialized use cases, they also store CAD reinforcement data for Allplan software.

The major disadvantage of the .TOKEN format is its extreme lack of standardization. Because "token" is a highly generic term, completely unassociated companies use the exact same .TOKEN extension for drastically different data types. These files are locked into specific vendor ecosystems and are essentially raw data drops, not designed for human readability. A standard text editor will often fail to open proprietary or binary tokens, rendering confusing gibberish instead of actionable data.

Since many .TOKEN files are structured text disguised by a generic extension, the most practical conversion targets are standard developer formats. Converting a .TOKEN to XML, PLIST, or TXT allows developers and system administrators to inspect the raw authentication payload or device manifest. However, be aware that modifying a converted token and converting it back will almost certainly invalidate its internal security hash, permanently breaking the token's authorization capabilities.

Because a .TOKEN file lacks a universal file header, standard online converters predictably fail to process them. Often, only the original parent software can properly validate, read, or export the data. However, convert.guru provides a pragmatic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects an underlying XML or Property List (plist) structure, we can parse the readable text so you can safely view and convert the internal data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TOKEN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TFT, CLIENT, KSS, JSON and ID files.

The TOKEN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TOKEN converter.
