About TOD files
A .TOD file is a high-definition video recording primarily associated with JVC Everio hard disk camcorders (such as the GZ-HD7). While the underlying content is technically standard MPEG-2 video - similar to Blu-ray streams - JVC utilizes this proprietary extension and specific folder structures to manage recording metadata on the device.
Users run into issues with .TOD files because most modern media players, web browsers, and editing suites like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro do not natively associate the extension with video, often refusing to open the file or importing it without audio. Additionally, because the footage is typically recorded in 1080i (interlaced) format, viewing it on modern progressive computer monitors without processing can result in visible "combing" lines or visual artifacts.
To ensure compatibility, the recommended workflow is converting these files rather than simply renaming them. For general viewing, sharing, or uploading to YouTube, convert .TOD to MP4 (H.264), which deinterlaces the footage and ensures broad device support. For archival or professional editing purposes, converting to MOV (ProRes) or MKV preserves the highest image quality without the proprietary lock-in of the JVC format. Just drag and drop to determine the format, view, and convert it.

The TOD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TOD converter.
