A .tfc file is most frequently a Texture File Cache generated by the Unreal Engine, developed by Epic Games. These files act as massive containers for streaming texture data in games like Batman: Arkham City or Mass Effect, separating bulky pixel data from the game logic to optimize loading times.
The catch for users is that a .tfc is not a standalone image file. It is a raw binary dump of compressed texture mips (often DXT or BC compression) that lacks the metadata required to interpret it. Simply trying to open it in a standard viewer will fail. Furthermore, these files depend on associated package files (like UPK or XXX) to define what the data actually represents. Without the corresponding package file, the .tfc is essentially an unreadable blob.
For modding or archiving, the best approach is to extract the contents into standard raster formats. Convert to PNG or TGA if you intend to edit the textures in software like Adobe Photoshop, as these formats preserve alpha channels and uncompressed quality. For quick viewing or web use, extracting to JPG is sufficient but lossy.
Note: A minority of .tfc files may be encrypted settings profiles from TikFinity or compiled music modules from TFM Music Maker. In the latter case, these are tracker audio files best converted to MP3 or WAV for modern playback.
