About TERRN files

The .terrn file is a specialized configuration document used exclusively by Rigs of Rods, an open-source soft-body physics vehicle simulator. It acts as the blueprint for in-game environments. Instead of storing actual 3D geometry, it stores plain-text parameters that dictate terrain scale, object placements, coordinate boundaries, and links to external heightmaps. This format presents major disadvantages for casual users. It is entirely proprietary to the Rigs of Rods ecosystem and the underlying OGRE3D engine. It cannot be opened by standard 3D modeling software or web browsers. Furthermore, because a .terrn file relies on external assets, sharing the file alone will result in broken maps and missing textures. Users often need to convert or extract the underlying text into standard TXT or XML formats for easier editing outside the game, or package them into ZIP archives to preserve asset links. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert into generic 3D formats like OBJ, standard online converters usually fail.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TERRN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
