About TER files

The .TER extension represents two distinct file types that often cause confusion due to their disparate uses.

1. Terragen Terrain File (3D Asset):
Most commonly, this is a proprietary binary heightmap created by Planetside Software Terragen, a tool used to generate photorealistic landscapes for VFX and games. These files contain elevation data (grid-based height values) rather than standard 3D geometry.

2. Entity-Relationship Diagram (Database/Data):
In database development contexts, a .TER file serves as an Entity-Relationship (ER) diagram, often associated with tools like Active Query Builder or legacy CASE (Computer-Aided Software Engineering) applications. These are typically XML-based text files describing table structures and relationships.

The TER Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TER converter.
