The .TEL file extension is a highly fragmented data format used across multiple distinct industries. Its most common use is storing train event recorder data for HaslerRail locomotive black boxes. However, it is also widely encountered as a SIM card phonebook backup created by legacy mobile phones, or as telemetry data for the FlightGear flight simulator. Other obscure uses include structural analysis models in S-FRAME, Italian tax return files from Agenzia delle Entrate, Telugu language text documents, and Zuken CADSTAR netlists.
Because multiple unrelated systems share the .TEL extension, users face significant challenges when trying to open them.
