About SZ files

The .sz file extension is most heavily used for WizIQ encrypted virtual classroom videos and Snappy compressed files. Educational platforms like WizIQ use this proprietary format to securely store offline lectures. By wrapping a standard MP4 video stream in custom DRM (Digital Rights Management) encryption, WizIQ prevents unauthorized distribution. Developers also encounter .sz files when working with data compressed by the Google Snappy algorithm, which prioritizes compression speed over maximum size reduction. In other technical niches, .sz files act as embedded project archives in IAR Embedded Workbench (using standard ZIP compression under the hood) or as simulation data in the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS).

These files are notoriously frustrating to handle. WizIQ videos are strictly locked; you cannot open them in standard media players like VLC or upload them to web platforms. Users are forced into using the proprietary WizIQ desktop app, which is restrictive and often requires an active account to authenticate playback. Similarly, Snappy compressed files lack a universal GUI archive manager, making them difficult to extract for non-developers compared to ubiquitous ZIP or RAR files.

Ideally, users want to convert WizIQ .sz files directly to standard MP4 or MKV formats for offline viewing, or decompress Snappy .sz files into standard TAR or CSV datasets. Unfortunately, due to DRM restrictions and specialized encoding, standard online conversion tools almost always fail to process them.

Because these formats rely on heavy encryption or niche developer compression libraries, they are extremely difficult to open or convert externally. Often, only the original authoring software can properly decrypt or read the data. We will inspect the file headers to determine if it is a WizIQ video, a Snappy archive, or an IAR project. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format like ZIP, viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TREC, CAMREC and TSCPROJ files.

The SZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SZ converter.
