About SWZ files

The .SWZ file type typically represents a Signed Runtime Shared Library (RSL) generated by the Adobe Flex SDK. These files function similarly to standard SWF files but contain a digital signature and are cached securely by the Adobe Flash Player to reduce application download times.

Because .SWZ files are optimized for secure caching and runtime execution, they are not designed to be opened directly by media players or image editors. A common frustration is that standard SWF players reject them due to the cryptographic signature or specific digest data. Furthermore, with Adobe Flash reaching End-of-Life (EOL), accessing the content inside these legacy web archives is increasingly difficult. Users often encounter these files when attempting to reverse-engineer old web games or applications.

For analysis or asset extraction, the best workflow is to convert the .SWZ into a standard SWF (Shockwave Flash) file by stripping the signature headers, which allows them to be opened in decompilers like JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler. Once converted to SWF, assets can be further extracted into PNG images, MP3 audio, or AS (ActionScript) code. Note: A minority of .SWZ files may be firmware update binaries for Set-Top Boxes using ALI Corp chipsets; these should not be converted as they are hardware-specific system files.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SWZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AS2, SWF and ASB files.

The SWZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SWZ converter.
