About SV4 files

An .SV4 file is a proprietary saved game file used by the classic theme park simulation games RollerCoaster Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. It stores the exact state of a player's amusement park, including terrain modifications, ride construction, guest locations, staff paths, and financial data. Players primarily use these files to resume gameplay or share custom parks with the community on sites like New Element Designs.

To open or convert these files, users must rely on the original game engine or the modern open-source recreation, OpenRCT2. You can learn more about the game's history on its Wikipedia page.

Users frequently encounter issues with .SV4 files because they are highly restrictive. The format is a closed, proprietary binary container originally written in x86 Assembly language. This means the data is locked to the game engine. You cannot natively preview the park layout in a web browser, and files can easily become corrupted if modified with incompatible expansions. Standard online converters completely fail to process it because the file contains game-specific hex code, not standard image or document data.

Because of these limitations, direct conversion to universal formats like JPG or PDF is impossible without rendering the game engine. Instead, the best "conversion" targets are modern game engine formats. Users typically migrate .SV4 files into SV6 (the RCT2 standard) or the newer .PARK format used by OpenRCT2.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert externally. Often, only the original software can properly parse the park coordinates and object data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the raw binary, and show hex or text strings. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and analyse its structural integrity, which is useful for debugging corrupted game saves.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SV4 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SV5, TD4 and TP4 files.

The SV4 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SV4 converter.
