About SV6 files

The .SV6 file extension represents a saved game file created by the classic theme park simulation game, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 (RCT2). It stores the complete state of a player's amusement park, including terrain heightmaps, ride statistics, financial ledgers, and the individual coordinate locations of thousands of AI guests.

To open and play an .SV6 file, you need the original RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 game or the modern, open-source engine recreation, OpenRCT2. These programs interpret the complex binary data to render the isometric 2D park environment.

The main disadvantage of the .SV6 format is its highly proprietary, closed-source nature. It relies on a custom run-length encoding (RLE) originally written in x86 assembly by developer Chris Sawyer. The format enforces strict legacy limitations, such as a hard cap on the number of rides, sprites, and pathing data. Because it contains pure simulation state data, you cannot open it in a text editor, nor can you view it natively in a web browser or standard operating system viewer.

Users often want to convert or migrate .SV6 files to bypass legacy game limits. The best target format is .PARK, which is the modernized save format used by OpenRCT2. Players also frequently extract specific rollercoaster designs from these saves into TD6 (Track Design) files to share individual rides.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to convert because it is not a standard document or media file. Standard online converters fail completely because they attempt to process the raw binary as text or generic images. Only the game engine can properly parse the compressed data structures. However, you can drag and drop your file into convert.guru to instantly identify the format, inspect the binary headers, and see if our analysis detects any corruptions or embedded metadata before you load it into your game.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SV6 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BLE, SV4, NSON and SV5 files.
