About DEX files

The .DEX extension is shared by two distinct but widely used formats: the Dalvik Executable found in every Android application, and the DEXIS Digital X-ray image used by dental professionals.

For mobile developers, .DEX files contain compiled code that runs on the Android Runtime (ART) or Dalvik Virtual Machine. These files are typically packaged inside APK archives and are not meant to be edited directly. To analyze or debug this bytecode, developers often need to convert .DEX to JAR (Java Archive) or decompiled Java source code using tools like dex2jar.
