About DEX files
The .DEX file format primarily functions as a Dalvik Executable used by the Android operating system. These files contain compiled bytecode that executes mobile application logic on the Dalvik Virtual Machine or Android Runtime. Additionally, the .DEX extension is used for proprietary dental X-ray images generated by DEXIS. Developers manage Android .DEX files using Android Studio, while reverse-engineers rely on decompilers like jadx. Dental professionals require expensive DEXIS software to view the medical variant. Users face significant challenges with both formats. Android .DEX files are compiled binaries, rendering them completely unreadable in standard text editors and hiding the original source code. DEXIS files suffer from vendor lock-in, making it difficult to share X-rays with patients. For Android development, the best conversion targets are JAR or SMALI files to enable code inspection. For dental files, converting to TIFF or JPG is essential for universal viewing. This file format is difficult to open or convert because it serves two highly specialized purposes, and often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail to process it.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DEX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DEX file to SMALI, JAR, JPG, JAVA, JS, TS, PY, CPP, C, CS, PHP or RB, you can use Android Studio or similar software from the "Android Executable Bytecode" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to DEX, try Android Studio or another comparable tool in the "Android Executable Bytecode" category.
The DEX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DEX converter.
