The .SUD file format is heavily fragmented and serves multiple distinct purposes. Most often, it functions as an internal data file for ERP systems developed by GFI Informatique. It is also widely used as a CAD reinforcement steel schedule in Nemetschek Allplan, a professional 3D design software. Other systems use .SUD files to store visual novel game scripts for the Makura engine, LISAM indexed databases by SHARC Informatique, or simple text-based Sudoku puzzles.
The primary disadvantage of .SUD files is their proprietary and closed nature. If a structural engineer sends you an Allplan .SUD schedule, you cannot open it without a specialized, expensive CAD license. These files are not supported by standard web browsers, document viewers, or basic spreadsheet software.
Users typically need to convert .SUD CAD schedules to standard formats like CSV, XLSX, or PDF to share material lists with contractors and fabricators. However, standard online converters fail to process them. This is because .SUD files lack a single public standard, and the binary data structures of an ERP database or an Allplan schedule are completely undocumented.
