About STOP files

The .stop file format is not a standard document or image; it is a file maliciously encrypted by the STOP/Djvu ransomware family. The malware targets user files - such as DOCX, PDF, and JPG - scrambles their internal binary data using strong military-grade encryption, and appends the .stop extension to lock the victim out of their own data.

Users typically try to convert .stop files to regain access to their personal documents or photos. However, standard conversion is technically impossible. A .stop file is a proprietary, closed, and encrypted data blob. You cannot simply rename the extension or use standard media converters, as the internal file headers required by software to read the data are mathematically scrambled.

To restore your original target formats, you must decrypt the file rather than convert it. Security firms provide tools like the Emsisoft Decryptor for STOP Djvu, which can successfully recover files if the malware used an offline encryption key. If an online key was used, data recovery is currently impossible without paying the attackers, which cybersecurity experts strongly advise against.

Because this is a deliberately destructive format, standard online converters fail to process it. While we cannot bypass ransomware encryption, our tool can still inspect the file to show plain text fragments or determine if the malware only partially encrypted large files.

Convert.Guru analyzes your STOP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The STOP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our STOP converter.
