The .STH file extension is primarily associated with South Surveying Instrument GPS equipment, storing raw geodetic survey data and satellite telemetry. Additionally, it is used by legacy Stitch Art Easy! software to save cross-stitch patterns, and by the Certificate Transparency standard for Signed Tree Head data files, which are natively formatted in JSON.
Opening these files is notoriously difficult because the underlying formats are highly niche and often proprietary. GPS .STH files require specific geodetic processing software from the manufacturer to decode the raw satellite data. Cross-stitch .STH files are locked to a specific pattern-making application. Because they are closed formats, standard desktop software, web browsers, and standard online converters fail to process them. This forces users into frustrating workarounds when trying to share survey coordinates with colleagues or print crafting patterns.
To make this data usable, GPS survey files should ideally be converted to GPX, CSV, or KML for compatibility with standard GIS tools. For cross-stitch patterns, exporting to PDF or JPG is necessary for easy printing and sharing.
