About SR2 files
The .sr2 extension primarily indicates a Sony Raw Image, the second generation of Sony's proprietary raw format (succeeding SRF and preceding ARW). These files contain unprocessed data directly from the camera sensor, wrapping the image data in a TIFF container. While excellent for professional editing in software like Adobe Lightroom or Capture One, they are impractical for general use. They are massive in size (often exceeding 20MB), cannot be opened by standard web browsers, and require specific codecs to view on Windows or macOS. Users frequently face difficulties when trying to email these photos or upload them to social media. To fix this, convert .sr2 files to JPEG or WebP for immediate sharing and web use. For archiving without losing metadata, converting to the open DNG (Digital Negative) format is recommended.
Less commonly, an .sr2 file may be a saved craft or vehicle design from the physics simulation game SimpleRockets 2 (now known as Juno: New Origins). These files store the structural data of rockets and planes. In rare industrial contexts, the extension is used for HMI screens in GE Digital Cimplicity SCADA systems, often saved as Microsoft Compound Documents.

The SR2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SR2 converter.
