A practical workaround for quick inspection is renaming the extension from .SQZ to ZIP, allowing you to extract the internal .ms6 (XML) file and view the raw data in a text editor, though this does not replace the simulation engine.
Historically, .SQZ also refers to legacy compressed archives. This includes Synthesizer Patch Banks for Midi Quest (used to store instrument settings) and game assets for 1990s DOS titles like Commander Keen and Titus the Fox. These older formats used aggressive, proprietary compression algorithms (often labeled "Squeeze") to save disk space. Unlike the eWater format, these cannot simply be unzipped; they require specific extraction utilities or modding tools (like Gamarch or Camoto) to convert the assets into usable WAV audio or BMP sprites.
