About SPDF files
The .SPDF extension usually refers to one of two distinct, proprietary formats that are notoriously difficult to access without specific software.
1. PerkinElmer Spectroscopy Data: The most common variation (approx. 50%) is a binary data file generated by PerkinElmer Spectrum software for IR (Infrared), FT-IR, or Raman spectroscopy. These files contain raw spectral data points and instrument parameters. The biggest obstacle is the proprietary lock-in: standard spreadsheet tools like Excel cannot read the binary structure, and older .SPDF files may not open in newer versions of the Spectrum suite without conversion. Researchers often need to convert these to CSV or JDX (JCAMP-DX) for analysis in Python/Matlab, or to PDF for publication.
2. Sealed (DRM) PDF: The second variation is a Sealed PDF document secured by Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies like Oracle IRM (formerly SealedMedia) or comparable "Unsealer" software. Unlike a standard PDF, an .SPDF is encrypted to enforce view limits, prevent printing, or expire after a certain date. Users frequently encounter these when accessing corporate manuals or secure ebooks. The major limitation is that generic PDF readers (like Adobe Acrobat) cannot open them; you must install the specific "Unsealer" client and authenticate. Users typically look to convert these to standard PDF to remove these restrictions, though this often requires having valid access rights first to "print to file."
Convert.Guru analyzes your SPDF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted SFPDF, PDF, SOS, EDT and TDR files.

The SPDF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SPDF converter.
