About SOX files

The .SOX file extension primarily operates as a Hunspell spell checker dictionary utilized by SoftMaker Office. Internally, these files are standard ZIP containers holding plain-text DIC (word lists) and AFF (affix rules) files. Secondary, less frequent uses include structural compound index files for Microsoft FoxPro 7 and Medisoft (Azalea Health), or compiled solution files for the Servoy RAD platform.

The primary disadvantage of the .SOX format is its rigid association with specific parent applications. Because these files function as backend system components - such as spell-check resources or database query accelerators - they cannot be opened natively by web browsers or standard text editors. Standard online converters fail to process them because they misinterpret the obscure .sox extension as an audio format or reject it outright. Furthermore, database index variants are proprietary binaries that are useless without their parent DBF data files.

The most practical conversion target for a dictionary .SOX file is standard text. You can extract the embedded DIC and AFF files to edit the dictionary entries manually. Just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our platform analyzes the internal file signature. If it detects the underlying ZIP structure of a SoftMaker dictionary, you can easily inspect and extract the contents without installing the full office suite.
