About SOU files

A .sou file is a rare and ambiguous format that typically falls into one of two distinct categories, both causing significant compatibility friction for modern users.

1. Super Mario 64 Object File (Approx. 60% of cases)

Most commonly, this is a proprietary 3D model data file used in the development and modding of Super Mario 64. Created using the internal Nintendo SDK toolchain (known as NINGEN), these files define 3D objects and display lists for the Nintendo 64 hardware.

2. Creative Voice / SBStudio II Audio (Approx. 10% of cases)

Alternatively, a .sou file may be a legacy audio container associated with Creative Labs Sound Blaster hardware or SBStudio II. These are often raw PCM or ADPCM streams used in early 90s DOS games (like those from LucasArts).

Convert.Guru analyzes your SOU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XBX, RBH and NFT files.

The SOU Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SOU converter.
