About SNA files
The .SNA extension creates a unique challenge because it serves two completely different communities: system administrators and retro gamers.
1. Drive Snapshot Disk Image (Most Common): If your file is large (hundreds of megabytes to gigabytes), it is a proprietary system backup created by Drive Snapshot. These files contain a block-level copy of a hard drive. The main drawback here is accessibility; unlike open formats, you cannot simply double-click an SNA file in Windows Explorer to retrieve a single document. Users typically need to convert these images to access specific files or migrate to a virtualization platform.
- Best Conversion Targets: For file retrieval, the goal is extraction to standard folders or ZIP archives. For virtualization, administrators often seek to convert SNA images to VHD or ISO formats to boot them in Hyper-V or VMware, though this usually requires mounting the image as a virtual drive first.
2. Emulator Snapshot (NO$GBA / ZX Spectrum): If your file is small (kilobytes), it is a "save state" - a freeze-frame of the device's RAM at a specific moment. This is used by the NO$GBA emulator (Game Boy Advance/DS) or classic ZX Spectrum emulators. The limitation here is compatibility; a snapshot taken in one emulator often won't load in another (e.g., VisualBoyAdvance).
- Best Conversion Targets: Gamers frequently need to convert .SNA snapshots to raw battery save files (SAV) to transfer progress between different emulators or flash cartridges. For ZX Spectrum enthusiasts, converting .SNA to Z80 or TAP format is common to ensure compatibility with modern hardware recreations like the ZX Vega.

The SNA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SNA converter.
