The .SNA file extension primarily acts as a proprietary Disk Image Backup created by Drive Snapshot (by Tom Ehlert) or Acronis True Image. These files capture a block-level snapshot of a hard drive for bare-metal system restoration. Additionally, the extension is widely used as a memory snapshot file by gaming emulators like NO$GBA and ZX Spectrum to store precise, frozen game states. Finally, Snap-on ShopStream software uses .SNA for storing automotive diagnostic data archives. The main disadvantage of .SNA files is their severe fragmentation across completely unrelated software ecosystems. A backup .SNA file is essentially a black box - often exceeding hundreds of gigabytes - and is entirely useless without its specific, licensed recovery environment. Emulator .SNA snapshots are strictly tied to specific emulator architectures; attempting to load a NO$GBA snapshot in a different program will instantly crash.
