About SLS files

The .sls file extension represents several distinctly different proprietary file formats. Its most frequent use is as a Simplicity Studio Project file created by Silicon Labs. In this context, it stores IDE workspace settings, hardware configurations, and source code links. Other common uses include software license files for Steinberg audio products, proprietary label design files for Hama printing software, and CAD reinforcement steel schedules for Nemetschek Allplan.

Users often need to convert .sls files because they lack the specific, often expensive software required to read them. For instance, Hama label files are entirely proprietary and cannot be viewed in web browsers or standard image viewers. Steinberg license files are locked, encrypted binary blobs designed specifically to prevent tampering. Standard online converters almost always fail to process these files because they are not standard media or text documents.

If you possess a Simplicity Studio file, the best conversion target is ZIP. Under the hood, these specific .sls files are standard compressed archives. You can extract their internal XML and source files simply by renaming the extension. For Hama labels, exporting to PDF via the original software is the only reliable workaround to share the design without losing layout formatting.

Because .sls files are heavily fragmented across completely unrelated applications, they are difficult to open blindly. Most rely on proprietary, closed-source structures that prevent third-party tools from interacting with the data. Even if the file is a locked binary, our analyzer can peek inside. If our system detects a supported embedded format - like a standard ZIP archive structure - viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SLS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XLSX, MP3, STL, PNG and ULS files.

The SLS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SLS converter.
