The .SKZ file extension is most commonly associated with project files created by the now-discontinued Sony Sketch application for Android. These files act as proprietary containers for your digital artwork, storing layer data, stickers, and canvas settings specific to the mobile app.
The Problem: Since Sony shut down the official Sketch online services and support in 2019, users often find themselves locked out of their own creations. Opening an old .SKZ file on a modern desktop or a device without the legacy app installed is virtually impossible because the format is not recognized by standard editors like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. They are essentially "black boxes" of data that native operating systems treat as unknown binary files.
The Solution: To recover or view your artwork, the most practical workflow is converting these proprietary project files into standard raster images. For web sharing and social media, convert to JPG or PNG. If you are archiving your digital art portfolio, converting to PDF ensures compatibility across all devices. In rarer cases (approx. 6%), an .SKZ file may be a Dingli SkyRuler mobile network test log. These are actually ZIP archives in disguise; renaming the extension to ZIP often allows you to extract the raw data logs inside.
