About SKZ files

The .skz file is most commonly a Sketch drawing file originally generated by the Sony Sketch mobile application or associated with Sketchbook Pro. These files function as project containers storing digital artwork, which includes multiple transparent image layers, brush stroke data, and configuration metadata. Less commonly, .skz files act as mobile network test data archives for Dingli SkyRuler or interface themes for the legacy SuperKaramba desktop widget engine on Linux.

The primary disadvantage of the .skz format is its heavily proprietary design coupled with the fact that the original Sony Sketch app was discontinued. This leaves users with orphaned artwork files that cannot be easily shared or opened on standard desktop operating systems. Native image viewers and modern web browsers do not contain the specific rendering engines required to decode the internal stroke and layer data. This forces users into a closed ecosystem where files are virtually unreadable outside the original software.

To restore accessibility to your artwork, the best conversion targets are flattened image formats like PNG or JPG, or a standard ZIP file to safely store the extracted layers. Converting to a flat image ensures universal compatibility, though you will permanently lose layer editability and undo history.

Because .skz is a closed, proprietary format, standard online image converters usually fail to process it. Often, only the original mobile app can properly read or export the full project data. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Since most .skz files are technically standard ZIP archives containing embedded PNG layers and JSON data, our analyzer can often inspect the file, extract the internal image layers, and bypass the limitations of traditional converters.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SKZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SKT, MSCZ and HZF files.

The SKZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SKZ converter.
