About SHV files
.SHV is a proprietary machine embroidery design file used exclusively by Husqvarna Viking sewing and embroidery machines, particularly the classic Designer 1 series. It contains detailed machine instructions, including stitch coordinates, jump threads, and thread color palettes. Users typically manage these files using the 6D Embroidery System or modern alternatives like mySewnet.
The primary disadvantage of the .SHV format is severe vendor lock-in. It is a closed, proprietary format that forces users to stay within the Husqvarna Viking hardware ecosystem. Standard operating systems, web browsers, and regular image editors cannot natively open or interpret these files. Because the file stores machine paths rather than pixels or standard vectors, common online converters consistently fail to process it.
Users frequently need to convert .SHV files when purchasing a different brand of embroidery machine or when sharing designs with clients. The best conversion targets are PES for Brother machines, DST for Tajima commercial machines, or JEF for Janome machines. When converting to a universal format like DST, be aware that proprietary thread color palettes are usually lost. For visual previewing, converting the stitch data to PNG or SVG is highly requested but technically challenging.
Because it is closed and hardware-specific, this file format is extremely difficult to open or convert outside of specialized software. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the intricate stitch data. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SHV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SHV file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Premier+ Embroidery or similar software from the "Machine Embroidery Design Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The SHV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SHV converter.
