About SHN files
The .SHN extension primarily identifies Shorten audio files, a legacy lossless compression format developed by Tony Robinson (SoftSound). In the early 2000s, this was the standard for trading high-quality live concert recordings (bootlegs) in communities like etree.org. Unlike MP3, it preserves perfect audio quality, but it is now effectively obsolete. Users often have trouble because modern media players (like iTunes or Windows Media Player) cannot open .SHN files natively, and the format lacks support for standard ID3 metadata tags, meaning your files often appear with no artist or track information. For archiving, the best practice is to convert these files to FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), which maintains the lossless quality but adds robust tagging and universal support. For general listening on mobile devices, converting to MP3 or AAC is recommended.
A secondary, unrelated use of the .SHN extension is in the MMORPG Fiesta Online. Here, the files act as proprietary data tables (ItemInfo.shn) containing game stats and item definitions. These cannot be played; they must be converted to CSV or readable text using a specialized community tool like an SHN Editor for modding purposes.

The SHN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SHN converter.
