About SGU files
The .SGU extension primarily identifies song files created by Band-in-a-Box, an intelligent automatic accompaniment tool developed by PG Music Inc. Unlike standard audio files, an .SGU file does not contain recorded sound waves. Instead, it functions as a lightweight instruction set containing chord progressions, key signatures, style references (e.g., Jazz, Rock, Country), and melody data.
Because of this architecture, .SGU files face significant compatibility hurdles. They cannot be opened by standard media players like VLC or iTunes. Furthermore, the file relies heavily on the local installation of "RealTracks" and "RealDrums" libraries; if you send an .SGU file to a user who lacks the specific style packs you used, the song will sound completely different - or may not play at all. This proprietary lock-in makes sharing difficult.
To make the file usable outside the Band-in-a-Box ecosystem, conversion is essential. For musicians wanting to edit the arrangement in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) like Ableton Live, converting to MID (MIDI) is the standard workflow. For listening, archiving, or web use, the file must be rendered and converted to MP3 or WAV.
*Note: In industrial contexts, an .SGU file may be a firmware update package for Sungrow solar inverters. These are binary system files strictly intended for hardware updates and cannot be converted to audio.*
Convert.Guru analyzes your SGU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SGU Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SGU converter.
