About SECRET files

The .secret file extension primarily functions as an encrypted credential storage file used by GNOME Keyring and the FreeDesktop.org Secret Service API on Linux operating systems. Alternatively, it is sometimes used as an ICC color profile format for Adobe Photoshop.

As a Linux secret storage file, the .secret format is heavily encrypted binary data. Its main disadvantage is that it is strictly locked to the original user's login session and system decryption keys. You cannot simply open or read these files outside of the operating system environment where they were created. Standard online converters cannot process this encrypted data because they do not have access to your local system's master keys or the required cryptographic environment.

If the file is an Adobe ICC profile, the ideal conversion targets are standard ICC or ICM formats to ensure broader compatibility with other graphics software. For keyring files, there are no direct target formats for conversion; the data must be manually decrypted and exported to standard formats like CSV or plain text directly from within the password manager application on the host machine.

Because the primary use case involves a closed, encrypted format, only the original Linux environment or Adobe software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail to process these files. However, you can just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. Our analyzer will inspect the file headers to determine if it is a color profile or an encrypted binary blob, showing text or embedded content if available.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SECRET file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VLD, PSD and BRUSH files.

FAQ

If you want to convert SECRET file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use GNOME Keyring or similar software from the "Encrypted Credential Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to SECRET, try GNOME Keyring or another comparable tool in the "Encrypted Credential Storage" category.

The SECRET Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SECRET converter.
