About SECRET files
Most often, a .SECRET file serves as an encrypted container for the GNOME Keyring or software implementing the FreeDesktop.org Secret Service API. These files reside deep within Linux user directories (typically ~/.local/share/keyrings) and function as a digital vault for storing passwords, SSH keys, and certificates. Because they are binary and secured with AES encryption tied to your user login, you cannot simply open them in a text editor like Notepad or Vim. Users often encounter these files when attempting to migrate data between Linux distributions or recover lost credentials, only to find the file is unreadable without the specific system daemon or the original master password.
For data migration, the best conversion target is a structured text format. If you need to import these credentials into a password manager like Bitwarden or KeePassXC, converting the decrypted contents to CSV or JSON is essential. Less commonly, a .SECRET file may be an obfuscated Adobe ICC Color Profile used internally by Adobe Photoshop. In this specific case, the file is actually a color management standard that has been renamed; changing the extension to ICC or ICM usually restores functionality for print and display calibration.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SECRET file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SECRET file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use GNOME Keyring or similar software from the "Encrypted Credential Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to SECRET, try GNOME Keyring or another comparable tool in the "Encrypted Credential Storage" category.
The SECRET Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SECRET converter.
