About SDE files

An .SDE file typically functions as an ArcGIS database connection file. It stores the authentication and routing parameters required to connect to a spatial database using Esri's Spatial Database Engine technology. A secondary but common use is the Shearwater dive computer log file, used by divers to export dive profile data. Other niche uses include SCADA project exports from Schneider Electric and FMEA databases from APIS IQ-Software.

To open an .SDE connection file, users rely on ArcGIS Pro or the legacy ArcMap. Shearwater dive logs require Subsurface or the official Shearwater Cloud software.

Users often try to convert these files when they lack an expensive ArcGIS license or need to migrate dive data to another platform. The main disadvantage of the .SDE format is its proprietary nature. ArcGIS .SDE files use the Microsoft Compound binary format, making them unreadable in standard text editors. Furthermore, connection files do not contain the actual spatial data - only the credentials and server paths. Shearwater .SDE files, while based on the standard ZIP structure, contain specialized data that general spreadsheet software cannot parse out of the box.

For dive logs, the best conversion targets are .UDDF, XML, or CSV for cross-platform compatibility. ArcGIS connection files are not meant for standard document conversion; they are best recreated manually if the connection parameters are lost.

Standard online converters routinely fail to process .SDE files because they lack the specific parsing libraries for spatial connections or dive log structures. These are closed, proprietary formats.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SDE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SDE2, XSDE, JSON, CPG, DEM, LPK and ODE files.

The SDE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SDE converter.
