About SCRIV files

A .SCRIV file is a project package used by Scrivener, an authoring software by Literature & Latte, to organize large manuscripts, screenplays, and research documents. Authors use it to break books into manageable chapters and scenes.

Users must use Scrivener to open the file as a complete, linked workspace. The primary disadvantage of the .SCRIV format is its proprietary and closed structure. It is not a single flat file, but rather a complex directory of individual RTF files, XML settings, and media assets. This means it cannot be opened by standard word processors like Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Sharing raw .SCRIV folders with editors or beta readers is useless unless they also own a paid license for the software.

For sharing and editing, authors must compile their projects to standard formats like DOCX, PDF, or EPUB. Keep in mind that native Scrivener metadata, like corkboard notes and character sheets, will usually be lost during this export.

Because a .SCRIV file is actually a folder (often hidden as a package on macOS), standard online converters completely fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read, stitch together, or export the data. If our analysis detects the supported embedded formats, viewing or extracting the individual RTF scenes is still possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SCRIV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SCRIVX and ZIP files.
