About SCG files

The .SCG extension generally serves two distinct, incompatible purposes, creating significant confusion for users. Most frequently (approx. 42%), it is a BigWorld Game Engine model file used in titles like World of Tanks. These are compiled, proprietary 3D assets optimized for runtime performance rather than editing. Users typically encounter friction here because standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot natively open them. To edit or 3D print these assets, they must be converted into interchange formats like OBJ or FBX.

The second common use (approx. 34%) is a Scilab Graphics file generated by Scilab, an open-source alternative to MATLAB. These files store the binary state of a graphics window (plots, charts). The main limitation is portability; sending an .SCG file to a colleague requires them to have Scilab installed to view it. For academic publishing, reports, or web use, these files are ill-suited and should be converted to PDF or SVG for vector clarity, or PNG for quick viewing. A minor percentage of these files may also be legacy ColoRIX raster images from the DOS era, which are now effectively inaccessible without specialized emulation or conversion tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SCG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SVG, RTON, PNG, CB2, BL and FCB files.

The SCG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SCG converter.
