About SCAP files

A .scap file is an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware update capsule. Hardware manufacturers, specifically those utilizing firmware from Phoenix Technologies, use this binary format to deliver system BIOS updates. The file contains the low-level machine code required to initialize hardware components during the computer's boot sequence.

The main disadvantage of .scap files is their absolute opacity. They are proprietary, compiled binary packages. You cannot open them with standard archive tools like 7-Zip or view their contents in a text editor. Attempting to modify a .scap file without specialized parsing software will instantly corrupt its digital signature. Flashing a modified or corrupted capsule will permanently "brick" the host motherboard, rendering the computer completely dead. Furthermore, this format is strictly hardware-specific; a .scap file meant for one motherboard model is useless and dangerous for another.

You do not "convert" a .scap file in the traditional sense, as it is not a media or document file. Instead, advanced users and hardware technicians extract the capsule payload to analyze the raw firmware. To inspect the firmware volumes or modify microcode, you must extract the .scap capsule to a raw BIN or ROM format using a dedicated parser. For system virtualization or emulator use (such as QEMU), you may need to extract it to an FD (Firmware Descriptor) file.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SCAP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SCAP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SCAP converter.
