About SC2 files

The .SC2 file extension is a chameleon in the gaming world, primarily serving as a proprietary scene description file for the BigWorld Engine, most notably driving the mobile hit World of Tanks Blitz. These files dictate how terrain, objects, and lighting are arranged in the game environment. The catch for users is that these are compiled, binary game assets; you cannot open them in standard image viewers or text editors. They are locked to the game engine, making it difficult for modders or artists to access the underlying 3D data without specialized unpacking tools.

Secondary to modern gaming, .SC2 files are also famously the saved city format for the 1993 classic SimCity 2000. While nostalgic, these files are incompatible with modern operating systems without emulation.
