About SBR files
The .SBR extension is a classic example of a filename collision, representing three completely different types of data depending on where you found it. Most commonly, it is a Tax Return Backup file generated by TaxACT. These files contain critical financial data but are strictly proprietary; you cannot double-click to read them in a text editor or open them in Microsoft Word. If you are trying to view old tax returns, the file is useless on its own - you must reinstall the specific year of TaxACT software that created it to unlock the data. For long-term archiving, relying on an .SBR file is risky due to software obsolescence; the best practice is to import the backup and immediately export your return to a standard PDF.
Alternatively, if you found this file in a game installation folder (common in titles by Electronic Arts), it is a Game Audio Sound Bank. These serve as containers for sound effects or music but are not playable in standard media players like VLC. To listen to or edit these assets, you need to extract the audio streams into a common format like WAV or MP3. Finally, in technical circles, an .SBR file might be a configuration file for SBR Injector (used for VPN tunneling) or a temporary "Source Browser" intermediate file generated by Microsoft Visual Studio during code compilation. The latter can safely be deleted to save space, as the compiler will regenerate it.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SBR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SBR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SBR converter.
