Convert SBJ to another file type

To convert SBJ libraries to another format, you need SmartDraw or other Data software.

Convert a file to SBJ

To convert other file formats to the "Library or Subject Data" file type, you need software like SmartDraw or a similar tool.

About SBJ files

The .SBJ file extension primarily identifies a proprietary SmartDraw Symbol Library or a raw Subject Data File used in academic research software. SmartDraw uses this format to store reusable vector shapes and icons for flowcharts and diagrams. Alternatively, programs like z-Tree and E-Prime use it to record participant inputs during behavioral economics or psychology experiments.

Both primary versions of the .SBJ file are highly restricted, closed formats. SmartDraw libraries utilize a specialized Microsoft Compound structure, which means modern cloud-based alternatives like Lucidchart or Microsoft Visio cannot import them natively. Subject data files are equally restrictive; they contain raw, unformatted experimental logs that essentially require specific academic software to read.

Converting these files is essential for collaboration and analysis. SmartDraw shapes should ideally be exported to SVG or PDF for scalable vector editing, while experiment data must be converted to CSV or XLSX for statistical analysis in tools like R or SPSS. During conversion, proprietary layer constraints or software-specific experimental metadata are usually lost.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file on convert.guru to identify the format, view its structure, and convert it when possible. Our platform can inspect the file, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or data extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SBJ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SBJ4, SDR, SDT and SP4 files.

The SBJ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SBJ converter.
