About SBG files
The .SBG file format has two distinct practical uses. Primarily, it serves as an SBaGen Binaural Beat File created by Jim Peters for the SBaGen command-line utility. Rather than holding actual audio data, these files contain plain-text sequence instructions used by the software's engine to generate binaural beats, pink noise, and specific frequency tones designed for brainwave entrainment. Secondarily, the .SBG extension acts as a container for game background images in the Fallout video game series, operating internally as standard JFIF (JPEG) raster images.
The major disadvantage of the .SBG format is its extreme lack of standalone compatibility. You cannot play an SBaGen sequence file on a smartphone, car stereo, or a standard media application like VLC media player. It demands the original synthesizer to read the script and output audio in real-time. Similarly, standard image viewers will frequently throw errors when opening Fallout .SBG files because the extension disguises the internal image data structure.
To actually use these files in the real world, conversion is mandatory. For audio playback on any device, you must render the binaural sequence into a standard format. Convert to WAV or FLAC for archiving and retaining perfect audio phase data, or convert to MP3 for portable web use. For Fallout background images, extracting or converting the file to JPG or PNG makes it instantly viewable. The SBG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SBG converter.
