About SA9 files
An .SA9 file primarily stores map documents created by DeLorme Street Atlas USA 9, a legacy GPS routing and mapping desktop application. A tiny fraction of these files are also used to store preset data for the Hue and Cry graphics plug-in developed by Flaming Pear Software. The main disadvantage of the .SA9 format is its heavily closed, proprietary nature. It locks your custom waypoints, routes, and map overlays inside an obsolete ecosystem that modern operating systems and web browsers cannot natively support.
Because DeLorme is defunct (acquired by Garmin in 2016), users face significant challenges migrating their historical GPS data. You typically need to convert these map vectors and coordinates into modern, open standards like GPX or KML to use them in Google Earth or modern mobile navigation apps.
However, standard online converters fail to process .SA9 files because the binary mapping data relies on undocumented, proprietary algorithms. Often, only the original Street Atlas software can properly read or export the data. Even if full conversion is blocked, our analyzer can inspect the raw hex data to extract embedded plain-text coordinates, route names, or metadata hidden within the file.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SA9 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SA9 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SA9 converter.
