About RX2 files
.RX2 is primarily a REX2 Audio Loop file created by Reason Studios (formerly Propellerhead Software). It contains audio data sliced into discrete rhythmic chunks, allowing Digital Audio Workstations to change the tempo of a sample without altering its pitch. These files are typically opened and managed in Reason, but they are also natively supported by major DAWs like Ableton Live and Logic Pro. A rare secondary use for the .RX2 extension is as a game data file in Red Dead Redemption 2 by Rockstar Games. The primary disadvantage of the .RX2 audio format is that it is highly proprietary. While incredibly effective for dynamic tempo matching during music production, these files are useless in standard media players, basic video editors, or web browsers. They require specialized audio production software to open and cannot be previewed natively in Windows or macOS. To use these loops in standard software, you must convert the .RX2 file to a universally supported uncompressed format like WAV or a compressed format like MP3 or OGG. Note that converting to these standard formats permanently bakes in the current tempo and completely destroys the dynamic slicing metadata. Because this slicing metadata and the proprietary data compression are closed formats, standard online audio converters often fail to process .RX2 files. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible.

The RX2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RX2 converter.
