About RUMBA files
A .rumba file is a user file (such as a photo, document, or video) that has been maliciously encrypted by the RUMBA ransomware, a notorious variant of the STOP/Djvu ransomware family. Cybercriminals use AES-256 or similar strong military-grade encryption algorithms to lock your personal data. They append the .rumba extension to the original filename (for example, invoice.pdf.rumba). Victims usually discover these files alongside a ransom note, typically named _readme.txt, demanding payment in cryptocurrency to restore access.
Users desperately want to convert these files back to their original state to regain access to irreplaceable family photos or critical work documents. However, the severe disadvantage of this format is that it is fundamentally an encrypted, locked box, not a standard file format. You cannot simply rename the extension to bypass the encryption. Standard file converters fail entirely because file conversion involves reformatting data structures, whereas a .rumba file has had its underlying data mathematically scrambled. Reversing this requires a specific cryptographic private key usually held on the attacker's command and control servers.
Depending on the exact ransomware version, specialized decryption tools from cybersecurity companies like Emsisoft may be able to recover your files if they were encrypted using an offline key that has been obtained by researchers. If our analysis detects an intact underlying format embedded inside a partially encrypted file, limited viewing or partial recovery may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RUMBA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The RUMBA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RUMBA converter.
