About RPMNEW files

A .rpmnew file is a configuration file generated by the RPM Package Manager during system updates on Linux distributions like Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, and CentOS. When an update includes a new default configuration file, but the system administrator has previously modified the existing file, RPM creates the .rpmnew file. This prevents the package manager from overwriting custom settings while still delivering the updated vendor defaults.

You can open and compare these files using native Linux text editors and diff tools like Vim (vimdiff), diff, or the specialized rpmconf utility.

The primary disadvantage of an .rpmnew file is that it requires manual intervention. The operating system ignores this file. If left unmerged, your system continues to run on outdated configurations, which can cause compatibility issues or miss critical security patches introduced in the new software version. Standard online converters fail to process this format because it is a raw, system-specific plain text file meant for merging, not a standard document format.

The best 'conversion' target is extracting the raw text to save it as a standard TXT or merging it back into its original CONF or CFG format. Converting to rich text formats will corrupt the syntax required by the system.

Because it is a system-level file, automated merging is risky.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RPMNEW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
