About RNW files

A .RNW file is an R Sweave or knitr document used heavily by data scientists to embed R programming code directly within LaTeX markup. It allows the automatic generation of dynamic, reproducible statistical reports. These files are typically opened, edited, and compiled using RStudio to produce a TEX file, which is then compiled into a high-quality typesetting PDF. The raw .RNW format is inherently developer-focused, making it highly disadvantageous for non-programmers. A standard user cannot open it natively or easily read the raw code buried within complex LaTeX tags. Furthermore, properly compiling the file requires a full installation of the R environment, specific R packages, and a LaTeX distribution like TeX Live, which can exceed 2GB of disk space and require significant technical knowledge to configure. Users typically need to convert .RNW files to PDF for final sharing, or to TEX if they only want to extract the LaTeX markup. Converting to standard text files like TXT loses all formatting and typesetting instructions. Because .RNW files rely on executing external data and R scripts at runtime, standard online converters routinely fail to process them. These converters lack access to your local datasets and the specific R environment required to generate the tables and charts. This is a closed loop process where only the original software can properly export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format - such as the rare ZIP-based banking update variants that also use the .RNW extension - viewing or conversion of those embedded assets may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RNW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RMD, R and RDX files.

The RNW Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RNW converter.
