About RMJ files
.RMJ files are legacy audio or audio metadata files created by the discontinued RealJukebox or RealPlayer software developed by RealNetworks. Originally released in the late 1990s, these files were primarily used to store compressed audio tracks or index their associated metadata in early digital music libraries.
The main disadvantage of the .RMJ format is its extreme obsolescence. It is heavily proprietary and completely unsupported by modern media players, smartphones, or web browsers. You cannot natively play an .RMJ file on iOS, Android, or standard Windows and Mac players without installing outdated software that may pose system security risks. Additionally, many .RMJ files are merely metadata pointers - meaning they contain text data like artist names and album art rather than the actual audio track.
To make these files usable today, conversion is mandatory. For broad playback compatibility across all devices, convert to MP3 or AAC. For lossless archiving (assuming the source file contains actual audio data), convert to FLAC or WAV. If the file only contains metadata, conversion might extract text or XML data. The RMJ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RMJ converter.
