The .RIC extension is a classic example of file format ambiguity, used by three distinct communities with completely incompatible software. Most commonly, it is a Rocket Motor Simulation file generated by OpenMotor. These files store critical internal ballistics data, grain geometry, and propellant configurations in a JSON-like structure. While powerful for rocketry, the files are useless without the specific simulation software installed, and data cannot be easily graphed in tools like Microsoft Excel without conversion. Users typically need to convert these to CSV or XLSX for analysis, or PDF to share static simulation reports.
Alternatively, a .RIC file may be a LEGO Mindstorms Image used by the EV3 or NXT robotics kits. These are proprietary raster graphics displayed on the robot's LCD screen. Standard image viewers like Adobe Photoshop or Windows Photos cannot open them directly, creating friction for educators and hobbyists trying to extract or edit robot assets. For these users, converting to standard PNG or BMP is essential for viewing and editing. Less frequently, the file may be an RI-CAD process diagram or an ISO 20022 financial status report (XML), both of which are text-based but require parsing to be human-readable.
