About RGS files
The .RGS extension represents a collision between two distinct digital worlds: legacy gaming and Windows software development.
For most general users (approx. 39%), an .RGS file is a RealArcade Game Registration or RAGS Game Engine file. These are proprietary packages used to launch or authenticate older casual games. The friction here is significant: RealArcade files are often locked obsolete DRM keys that cannot be opened on modern Windows 11 systems, while RAGS (Rapid Adventure Game System) files are self-contained text adventure games that require the defunct RAGS Player to run. Users are frequently stuck with unplayable game archives.
For developers and system administrators, an .RGS file acts as a Microsoft ATL Registrar Script. Generated by Microsoft Visual Studio, these text-based scripts instruct the Windows Registry on how to register COM (Component Object Model) components. Unlike standard REG files which simply import static keys, .RGS scripts are dynamic, using replaceable parameters (like %MODULE%) parsed at runtime. The challenge is that they cannot be double-clicked to merge into the registry; they must be processed by the ATL Registrar or compiled into a DLL.
Conversion Solutions:
For RAGS Games: The best modern workflow is converting the proprietary .RGS game file into HTML5 using tools like rags2html. This allows the legacy game to be played directly in a web browser without installing old software.
For Registry Scripts: Developers often convert .RGS to TXT to view the logic or manually transcribe the entries into a static REG file for easier distribution. Converting to PDF is recommended for archiving documentation of the component's registration logic.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RGS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The RGS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RGS converter.
