About RGS files

.RGS files primarily function as either DRM (Digital Rights Management) registration licenses for RealArcade and GameHouse titles, or as Active Template Library (ATL) Registry Scripts used by developers in Microsoft Visual Studio. Less commonly, they serve as game scene files for the Rust-based Fyrox Engine or assets for the RAGS game creation system. RealArcade .RGS files are heavily restricted. They are closed, proprietary DRM files designed specifically to lock a game to a user's machine, making them completely useless outside their specific game installation ecosystem. Alternatively, Visual Studio .RGS scripts contain plain text instructions for adding COM components to the Windows Registry, but they rely heavily on specific compiler tools to parse and execute the logic properly.

Users typically want to convert these files to bypass frustrating DRM restrictions, extract game assets, or read developer registry keys in plain text. Converting a game license is essentially impossible with standard online tools because the data is encrypted or highly proprietary. Registry scripts, however, can be converted to standard TXT or REG formats to read or merge the keys manually, though structural logic might be lost if separated from the original C++ project.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online converters fail to parse the proprietary DRM headers of game licenses or the unique syntax of ATL scripts. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying text format or embedded data, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RGS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RGI, SMIL and RM files.

The RGS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RGS converter.
