About RAL files

The .ral extension serves two distinct, incompatible communities: government administrators and model railroad hobbyists.

1. Government Inventory Data (Primary Use)

Most commonly, .ral files are backup archives generated by Aplikasi Persediaan, a legacy inventory management tool used by Indonesian government agencies (SIMAK-BMN) for state asset reporting. While these files appear opaque, they are technically ZIP archives containing internal database files (often DBF or TXT). Users typically need to convert these files to Excel or PDF for auditing, but the source software is restricted to authorized personnel.

To Access Data: Rename the extension from .ral to zip and extract the contents. You can then open the internal files with Microsoft Excel or a text editor.

2. Model Railroad Layouts

In the hobbyist sector, .ral files are proprietary layout designs created by Railroad & Co. TrainController or WinRail. These files store complex track geometry, signaling logic, and 3D scenery data. They are binary and locked to their respective software versions, making them impossible to open in standard CAD tools like AutoCAD.

For Viewing/Sharing: Use the original software to export the layout plan to PDF or JPG.
For CAD Editing: Some versions allow exporting to DXF, but interactive simulation data will be lost.
