About QTZ files

A .QTZ file is an Apple Quartz Composer composition file. Originally bundled with Apple's Xcode tools, Quartz Composer was a node-based visual programming language used to process and render graphical data. These files were commonly used to create interactive macOS screensavers, live video mixing filters in VJ software, and custom transitions in Apple video editors.\n\nThe primary disadvantage of the .QTZ format is its absolute dependence on the macOS core graphics framework. It is proprietary, highly platform-specific, and entirely deprecated. Apple officially abandoned Quartz Composer in recent versions of macOS, meaning these files are extremely difficult to open, edit, or execute on modern operating systems without relying on legacy hardware or complex workarounds. Furthermore, a .QTZ file cannot be opened natively on Windows, Linux, or web browsers, and it requires a dedicated rendering engine to output visual data.\n\nConverting a .QTZ file is challenging. If you need the visual output, the best target formats are standard video files like MP4 or MOV, but doing so requires real-time screen capture or legacy rendering software because standard online video converters cannot execute the internal code. However, at its core, a .QTZ file is stored as an internal PLIST (Property List) data structure. Therefore, extracting the node logic to XML or TXT is a practical alternative for developers trying to salvage the project's logic.\n\nThis format is exceptionally difficult to convert because it does not contain video frames; it contains rendering instructions. Just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our analysis can detect the underlying PLIST structure, allowing you to inspect the internal node graph and text data even if the visual rendering fails.

The QTZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our QTZ converter.
