.QTL files are XML-based text documents originally designed for Apple QuickTime Player. They function as shortcut links that direct the media player to stream a video or audio file hosted on a remote server, rather than storing the video data locally.
These files are natively handled by Apple QuickTime Player. Since the internal structure is pure markup language, you can also open .QTL files using standard text editors like Notepad++ or Apple TextEdit.
Users constantly try to convert .QTL files into video formats like MP4 or MOV and fail. The critical disadvantage of the .QTL format is that it contains absolutely no video or audio data - it typically measures only a few kilobytes. Furthermore, Apple has deprecated QuickTime for Windows, making these files practically useless on modern PC operating systems without manual intervention.
