Convert a file to QRY
To convert other file formats to the "Query Definition File" file type, you need software like Microsoft_Excel or a similar tool.
About QRY files
A .QRY file is a Saved Query definition used by various database management tools to retrieve specific records. Unlike a spreadsheet or a database file, a .QRY file contains only the instructions (SQL commands, filter logic, and sort orders) - it does not store the actual data results. Historically, these files were heavily used by Microsoft Query (a legacy tool included with Microsoft Excel), SAP Crystal Reports, and specialized enterprise systems like Visma Business, IBM Rational ClearQuest, and the Texas CRIS crash data system.
The main downside for users is that .QRY files are useless without a live connection to the original database. You cannot simply "open" them to see a report; the software must execute the query against a server. Furthermore, because the extension is generic, a .QRY file created in Corvu BI is completely incompatible with one from ArcGIS. Many are binary or proprietary, meaning you cannot read the logic even with a text editor. For recovery and migration, the best approach is converting readable .QRY files to TXT or SQL to salvage the query logic. If you have access to the original environment, run the query and export the results to CSV or XLSX for portability.
Convert.Guru analyzes your QRY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted QRY5, ACCDT, MDA and LCT files.

The QRY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our QRY converter.
