About QEF files
The .qef file extension is a source of frustration for many users because it typically belongs to one of two discontinued or proprietary ecosystems, effectively locking your data inside. Most commonly, it is a Legal Document Interview Data file generated by older versions of Quicken Family Lawyer (software now evolved into Quicken WillMaker). These files do not contain the final legal document itself; instead, they store the binary "interview" answers - names, beneficiaries, and asset choices - used to generate the forms. Because this format is proprietary and version-dependent, modern text editors like Microsoft Word cannot read them, and even current versions of WillMaker may fail to import files created decades ago.
Alternatively, a .qef file may be a Quikscribe document used in professional transcription. These files encapsulate audio and text pointers, requiring the Quikscribe Player to function correctly.
For legal archives, the immediate goal is data recovery. Users should look to convert these files to human-readable formats like PDF (for archiving) or RTF/DOCX (for editing).
Convert.Guru analyzes your QEF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert QEF file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Quicken WillMaker or similar software from the "Legal Document Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to QEF, try Quicken WillMaker or another comparable tool in the "Legal Document Data Storage" category.
The QEF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our QEF converter.
