About PVW files
The .pvw extension is a catch-all container typically used for "preview" data, with two distinct dominant formats that cause confusion.
Most commonly, a .pvw file is a Cutter Design Preview generated by Roland CutStudio. In this context, the file is often just a TIFF image wrapped with metadata, created to provide a quick visual reference for vinyl cutting plotters. The frustration for users is that while the file represents a design, it is usually a flattened raster image, not the editable vector paths required for cutting. You cannot typically extract the cut lines from this file if the original CST source is lost; you only get a pixelated reference.
Alternatively, .pvw files are associated with PTC Creo View (formerly ProductView). These are 3D visualization files used to share lightweight representations of CAD assemblies without exposing the intellectual property of the original Pro/ENGINEER or Creo files. These files are proprietary and difficult to view without installing the specific PTC viewer suite.
Conversion Recommendations:
For Roland Files: Convert to JPG or PNG to view the design on any device. Since the internal data is often TIFF, renaming the extension to tif sometimes works, but a proper converter ensures compatibility.
For PTC Creo Files: Convert to 3D PDF for easy sharing, or capture 2D screenshots to JPG for documentation.
For Archiving: Convert to PDF to ensure the visual reference is preserved even if the proprietary software becomes obsolete.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PVW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PVW file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Roland CutStudio or similar software from the "Design Preview & 3D Visualization" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to PVW, try Roland CutStudio or another comparable tool in the "Design Preview & 3D Visualization" category.
The PVW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PVW converter.
